Written during the darkest days of Stalin’s reign, and banned for decades, Bulgakov’s “Funny, devilish, brilliant satire”* The Master and Margarita became a literary phenomenon with a cult following. In this new musical retelling, a band of dissident rock musicians (or perhaps the demonic retinue of Satan himself) visit 1930s Moscow to expose social climbers, bureaucrats, and profiteers. The Master—an idealistic writer working on a novel about Christ and Pontius Pilate—is silenced and detained in an asylum. Margarita, his collaborator and lover, embarks on a journey through heaven and hell to save him and his manuscript.
This fantastical, wildly comedic political satire celebrates love that defies all odds, the interplay of good and evil, and the freedom of the spirit in an unfree world. This rock musical channels the resistance of artists in totalitarian states across the globe. Fans of Hadestown and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 – belly up to the stage!

Waiting for Godot
Waiting for Godot

"Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett is a minimalist, existential play that follows two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, as they wait for the elusive Godot. Set on a desolate country road, the pair pass the time through debate on when Godot will come, why they’re waiting for him, and whether they’re even at the right tree…
The play explores themes of time, uncertainty, and the human condition, raising questions about the purpose of life and the search for meaning. Despite their constant waiting, the characters’ situation remains unchanged, leaving the audience to reflect on the futility and absurdity of existence."

Inspired by the Grimm brother’s “The Story of a Boy Who Went Forth to Learn Fear”, Rebekka Kricheldorf re-imagines the tale of the two brothers in a contemporary dystopian world. Ingo resides in a high-tech security fortress to protect his own family from the ""bad neighborhood"", a barbaric dog-eat-dog world that is rampant with crime, gang wars, and violence. It is the home of his fearless brother Raul and when their worlds collide, chaos erupts, turning everyone's lives upside down, shaking their concepts of love, courage, and justice to the core, and blowing up their moral categories. It is a ""dark parable” disguised as comedy with strong farcical elements.

The Margriad
We are thrilled to announce our upcoming production, The Margriad, or the Tragedy of Queen Margaret, an electrifying new adaptation of Shakespeare’s history plays.
Conceived by Séamus Miller (adapter/director of last season's Coriolanus), this bold production runs from March 6 to 29 at Gunston Arts Center – Theatre Two in Arlington, VA.
This compelling adaptation brings to life one of Shakespeare’s most formidable characters, Queen Margaret of Anjou. By weaving together Henry VI (Parts 1–3) and Richard III, The Margriad follows Queen Margaret—a warrior, a survivor, and the ultimate political force—through her rise to power and downfall.
With an ensemble of seven actors—including Artistic Director Sara Barker and Artistic Associates Kathleen Akerley and Alyssa Sanders, each portraying Margaret in one of the show's three acts—The Margriad illuminates Margaret at the forefront of the Wars of the Roses.
In the words of adaptor/director Séamus Miller,
“We have combined four of Shakespeare's histories into a single production, following Queen Margaret—the woman who survives them all. I refer to the adaptation as an anti-war ghost story. Dark, fast-paced, irreverent, and aggressive, 'The Margriad' takes us to the intersection of war and greed—and the sharpest edge of our comfort zone.”
Artistic Director Sara Barker adds, “In a time when our nation faces political upheaval and the world grapples with ongoing conflicts, the characters in The Margriad, including the great queen herself, offer insights into the consequences of irresponsible leadership and the resilience we need to navigate greed-fueled chaos.”
The Margriad runs 2 hrs. including two 10-minute intermission.
March 6-29, Thurs-Sat 7:30pm, Sat-Sun 2pm
As part of Avant Bard's commitment to accessibility, all Previews (March 6-8) and all Saturday 2pm matinees are Pay What You Can (PWYC), meaning patrons name their ticket price, with no set price minimum and no cap on the number of tickets they may purchase as PWYC. Free admission to all shows is open to all Arlington middle and high school students along with $20 tickets for their accompanying parent(s)/guardian(s).
Avant Bard will be providing one mask-mandatory performance: Saturday, March 22, at 2pm and 7:30pm.

Professor Woland's Black Magic Rock Show
Written during the darkest days of Stalin’s reign, and banned for decades, Bulgakov’s “Funny, devilish, brilliant satire”* The Master and Margarita became a literary phenomenon with a cult following.

This landmark production of one of opera’s undisputed masterpieces will be a collaboration with Indian-Canadian choreographer Hari Krishnan, whose work brilliantly combines the aesthetics of this traditional dance form with contemporary movement and questions of gender norms. The work will once more be directed and conducted by IN Series Artistic Director Timothy Nelson, and feature a cast of local favorites and international artists known for their interpretations of opera of the baroque. The INnovātiō Orchestra, IN Series’ own period baroque band, will blend with music of South India in an evening of whirling passion, music, poetry and dance. The Margriad (PWYC)

Waiting for Godot
Waiting for Godot
Presented by Scena Theatre
"Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett is a minimalist, existential play that follows two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, as they wait for the elusive Godot. Set on a desolate country road, the pair pass the time through debate on when Godot will come, why they’re waiting for him, and whether they’re even at the right tree…
The play explores themes of time, uncertainty, and the human condition, raising questions about the purpose of life and the search for meaning. Despite their constant waiting, the characters’ situation remains unchanged, leaving the audience to reflect on the futility and absurdity of existence."
